Why Whole-House RO Is Different From Under-Sink RO
A standard under-sink RO unit treats maybe 50 to 75 gallons a day at one faucet. A whole-house system has to treat every gallon that touches every fixture, which means a completely different scale of membrane, storage tank, and repressurization pump. Whole-house RO is warranted specifically when a well tests high for nitrates, arsenic, or other dissolved contaminants that a standard treatment train doesn’t address, and where the household wants every tap in the house protected, not just the kitchen sink. Most wells never need this step; a complete well treatment system with standard components handles the bulk of well water problems on its own.
When to Call a Pro vs. DIY
This isn’t a DIY installation. Sizing the membrane stage, tying in the repressurization pump correctly, and building the pre-treatment train ahead of it requires real plumbing and water treatment experience. A poorly sized whole-house RO system will either starve your household of pressure or burn through membranes in months instead of years.
Before you spend five figures on this, get a full contaminant panel done and confirm you actually have a problem whole-house RO solves that a standard treatment train doesn’t. That test costs a few hundred dollars and could save you from an unnecessary system.
