What a Softener Actually Fixes (and What It Doesn’t)
A softener does one job: it swaps calcium and magnesium ions for sodium through resin beads in a tank, using an ion-exchange process. That’s it. It stops scale from building up in your water heater, your pipes, and every fixture in the house. It does nothing for iron, nothing for bacteria, and nothing for pH. It’s one component of a whole house well water filtration system, not a fix for every problem on its own.
This distinction matters because a common installation mistake is expecting a softener to fix rusty water as well, which just fouls the resin bed instead. If a water test shows iron above roughly 2 to 3 ppm, that iron needs to be filtered out ahead of the softener, or the resin’s usable lifespan drops from a normal 10 to 15 years down to roughly 5 to 7.

Wells in hard-water regions commonly test somewhere between 10 and 25 GPG, well past the “Very Hard” threshold on the USGS scale above. That’s a different range than the 6 GPG typical of a municipal water report, and it changes how big a unit is actually needed.
Sizing a Softener Correctly
Grain capacity has to match household daily water use multiplied by hardness level, not just the number printed on the box at the hardware store. The sizing math follows a standard formula:
- Estimate daily water use: roughly 75 to 100 gallons per person per day for most households.
- Multiply that by your hardness in grains per gallon to get your daily grain removal need.
- Multiply by 7 to get your weekly total, then size the unit so it regenerates roughly once a week, not daily.
For a family of four at 15 GPG hardness, that works out to around 30,000 grains of capacity needed weekly. Sizing standards point to a 32,000 to 40,000 grain unit in that case, not the 24,000 grain “standard” model that gets pushed at big box stores.
Salt-Based vs. Salt-Free: What’s the Real Difference
Salt-based ion-exchange softeners actually remove hardness minerals. Salt-free “conditioners” use a template-assisted crystallization process that changes the mineral structure so it’s less likely to stick to surfaces, but the hardness minerals are still in the water. For well water running above 15 GPG, salt-based systems are the standard recommendation. Salt-free units generally can’t keep up at that concentration, based on documented field performance.

A softener installed slightly wrong won’t fail outright. It’ll just quietly underperform for years, and most homeowners never realize it until they get a water test done.
