Below Ground: Where Your Water Actually Comes From

Well Casing

The casing is the steel or PVC pipe lining your well from the surface down into the ground, keeping the borehole from collapsing and blocking surface contaminants from seeping in around the edges. Most residential wells run 100 to 300 feet deep, though this varies enormously by region and local geology.

Submersible Pump

Sitting down inside the casing, below the water line, the submersible pump pushes water up through the drop pipe on demand. It’s sized to your well’s depth and your household’s flow needs, and it’s the component that fails most dramatically when it goes, since a dead pump means zero water pressure anywhere in the house.

Pitless Adapter

This is the fitting where the underground supply line branches off the well casing below the frost line, routing water toward your house without needing an above-ground pipe that would freeze every winter. The well cap seals the top of the casing, keeping insects, rodents, and surface runoff out of your water supply. This is the one part of the whole system you can actually inspect yourself without any tools. A cracked, loose, or poorly sealed cap is one of the most common and most preventable causes of bacterial contamination identified in well water testing.

Inside the House: Pressure Tank and Switch

Water arrives at your pressure tank, a sealed tank with an internal air bladder that maintains consistent water pressure without the pump needing to run constantly. The pressure switch tells the pump when to turn on (typically around 40 PSI) and off (typically around 60 PSI). The Treatment Train: Where Filtration Fits In

After the pressure tank, water passes through whatever treatment equipment your well chemistry requires, in a specific order that matters: sediment filter first, then an iron or manganese filter, then a water softener, then carbon filtration, then UV disinfection right before the water splits off to feed every fixture in the house. Skipping a stage, or installing them out of order, is the single most common mistake documented on well systems that were partially DIY-installed.

Distribution: How Water Reaches Your Fixtures

From the treatment train, water runs through your home’s standard supply plumbing to every faucet, shower, toilet, and appliance. Anything installed downstream of a properly ordered treatment train should be receiving fully treated water. If one fixture shows a problem the rest of the house doesn’t (staining at just one sink, for example), that usually points to a localized plumbing issue rather than a treatment failure.

Reading Your Own System

Walk your property and find your well cap. Note whether it’s sealed tight. Go to your basement or utility room and find your pressure tank, pressure switch, and any treatment equipment already installed. Knowing where each component physically is, before anything breaks, means you can describe the actual problem accurately when you call a contractor, instead of just saying “no water” and waiting for someone to figure it out from scratch on site.

When to Call a Pro vs. DIY

Everything above ground, the pressure tank, the treatment train, and fixture-level plumbing, is fair territory for a comfortable DIYer to inspect and maintain. Everything below the well cap, the casing, the pump, the pitless adapter, requires licensed well equipment and training to service safely. Never attempt to open or work on the well casing itself without a licensed well contractor; it’s easy to contaminate your water supply or damage equipment that’s expensive to retrieve from depth.
